Welcome to Reclypt’s bi-weekly newsletter, the place where you learn how we create change in the circular economy (even if you don’t know what that is). If you want to make a difference, this is the only newsletter you need.
🌀 Common Chemicals of Concern in Clothing
*TLDR: If you’re not ready to face the fact that we’re being knowingly and invisibly poisoned by our clothes, go ahead and skip to Circular Resources. I, myself, had to skip some parts of this book.
I have been SO excited to read Reclypt’s June book selection, Too Dye For, ever since it popped up on my radar when the author, Alden Wicker (also founder of Ecocult), had her TV interview cancelled because the news org’s lawyers were scared they would get sued by the petrochemical and fashion industry!
Yes, you read that right.
I didn’t know much about chemicals other than they and the industry are toxic and powerful (if you didn’t know this, you should watch Mark Ruffalo’s movie: Dark Waters); but this book has blown me away and I couldn’t put it down! It’s changed my shopping habits, how I approach health issues (& those of my friends’ and families’), and what can stay in my closet.
Too Dye For is making the connection because chemicals in fashion and health issues many of us face. The graphic below says it all.
I truly don’t even know where to begin as this book covers case studies, history, effects on fertility, the autoimmune epidemic, lack of standards or reporting for chemicals, and how we can protect ourselves.
So, if you want to learn more, join the conversation, share your experiences, and/or are just interested in sustainable style…

📰 What We’re Reading
“TOO DYE FOR”
HOW TOXIC FASHION IS MAKING US SICK–AND HOW WE CAN FIGHT BACK. June’s Book of the month by Alden Wicker reveals how clothing manufacturers have successfully swept consumers’ concerns under the rug for more than 150 years, and why synthetic fashion and dyes made from fossil fuels are so deeply intertwined with the rise of autoimmune disease, infertility, asthma, eczema, and more. In fact, there’s little to no regulation of the clothes and textiles we wear each day. This book explains how we got here, what the stakes are, and what all of us can do in the fight for a safe and healthy wardrobe. Join our NO READING REQUIRED discussion on Saturday June 29th @ 4p on Governors Island.
