Last night a wonderful group energetically walked through FABSCRAP’s door, ready to knit!
Skip to the bottom for resources, common mistakes, & step-by-step directions to start knitting!
This was our third and final workshop of this quarter - all about Identifying Fiber! These workshops are meant to compliment other events during this quarter such as our upcoming:
Makers Show & Tell with Climate Cafe - Tuesday March 11th @ FABSCRAP Warehouse
-and-
Book Club Discussion with the author, Alden Wicker - Wednesday March 19th @ LIU BK
This week is also Yarn Week @ FABSCRAP, so we opened our doors early for shopping. Come in for 15% of yarn or shop online!
While I don’t love opening this with lots of ~ads~ I am just so excited to share all the fun things happening at FABSCRAP! Back to the workshop:
First, our two instructors, Sophie and Zoe, arrived!
Sophie Sandberg is an activist, educator, and street artist combating gender-based violence. She created the popular initiative, Catcalls of NYC, which raises awareness about street harassment using colorful chalk art. She has been knitting and sewing for two decades and loves teaching hands-on skills.
FABSCRAP instructors are able to bring their own assistant instructor. Sophie brought fellow knitter and friend of a friend, Zoe!
I recruited some knitting friends to help too.
Shout out to Anne, founder of Next Season, and Creszenz who came through to support our instructors!
As attendees arrived and shopped, there were sample knits to unraveling! So many times throughout the night I overheard people say, “I didn’t realize our clothes were all one string!” Not only is unraveling a tangible way to see the interlocking loops that make our clothes and help gain a better understanding of garment construction but you get yarn out of it!
Next, we brought the group together to learn the basics of knitting!
After we had group intros, a workshop overview, and shoutouts to the attendees that went to all three workshops (!!), we provided all attendees with their own Fabric Journal all about Knits!
As a refresher, we covered Fiber in January, Woven in February, and now Knits in March.
Then, we got into the basics of knitting!
Knitting is a huge category that we could go on and on about. But for the purpose of this workshop we wanted to ensure our attendees understood the basics. To us that’s understanding the types of needles, yarn, their uses, and common mistakes.
We started with a common mistake in knitting - using the wrong size of needle.
*The finer the yarn, the smaller the needle's size.
Below is a table we reviewed to better understand which needle size goes with which yarn weight AND their uses.
Finally, the knitting started!
